Tesla rocker panel replacement cost: rocker covers from CA$139 for the Model 3 and Model Y

Updated · Version française

Tesla Model 3 rocker panel cover, left, Tesla OE 1089828-00-D

On a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, "rocker panel" can mean two different things, and the price difference is enormous. What is usually scraped, cracked or torn off on a kerb or a low post is the rocker panel cover: the long plastic trim along the sill under the doors, also called the side skirt. That part is CA$139 to CA$339 per side in our catalogue, it clips and bolts on, and Tesla's own service manual allows 0.06 to 0.18 hour to fit one. The rocker panel underneath it is a welded structural member of the body; when that is bent, the repair is a body-shop job measured in days, not a part we sell.

Below: the cover price for each generation next to Tesla's flat-rate time, the Model Y's separate carrier, what the labour covers, and how to tell from a quote which of the two repairs you are being charged for. Our prices are generated from the catalogue, so they match the product pages. We sell parts and do no body work, so we give no dollar figure for labour or paint.

Rocker cover price and Tesla's labour time, by generation

Tesla's manuals call this part the lower rocker panel cover (Cover - Rocker Panel - Lower) on the Model 3 and the 2020–2024 Model Y, and simply the rocker cover on the Model Y Juniper. It is black textured plastic, so on most cars it needs no paint. The times below are for one side.

The 2020–2024 Model Y is the only one of the four where the cover clips to a separate carrier bolted to the body. A cover that has been torn off hard often takes the carrier's clip mounts with it, so that car can need both parts: the cover at CA$209 and the carrier at CA$269. Tesla allows 0.12 hour for the carrier on top of the cover, and 0.18 hour on cars with the structural battery pack.

We do not stock a rocker cover for the Model 3 Highland. Tesla allows 0.12 hour to replace one on that car (code 1220020012).

What the labour time covers

On the 2017–2023 Model 3, Tesla's procedure releases the bolt covers, removes the bolts that hold the cover to the body, releases the clips that join it to the front and rear wheel arch liners and the clips along the rocker panel, and lifts the cover off. The new cover goes on the same way: 0.18 hour for the whole thing.

On the 2020–2024 Model Y the cover is clips and tabs only, released from the two wheel arch liners and from the carrier, which is why Tesla's time is 0.12 hour. The carrier underneath is bolted and clipped to the body and is its own procedure. On the Juniper the cover is eleven clips and eleven tabs, with the front and rear door windows lowered first, and Tesla's time is 0.06 hour.

Tesla notes that each flat-rate time already includes the procedures it links to, and that correction codes should not be stacked unless the procedure says so. There is no paint line for a textured black cover; a painted cover, offered on some cars, would be a refinish line on top.

Cover, carrier or the rocker panel itself: reading the estimate

If the estimate shows a part under about four hundred dollars with a Tesla number that starts 1089828, 1089829, 1497740, 1497744, 1921724 or 1921725, you are looking at the cover: a bolt-on plastic part and a short labour line. If it shows a sill, a rocker panel or a rocker reinforcement with cutting, welding, corrosion protection and a paint line for the body colour, that is the structural panel. That repair is real body work, often several hours of labour plus refinish, and it is not a part we sell.

A cover can be ordered to replace a scraped one on its own. If the sill behind it is dented, the cover will not sit flat until the panel is straightened, so have the shop check the panel before ordering just the cover.

On a French-language estimate in Québec, the cover is the couvercle de bas de caisse or the jupe latérale; bas de caisse on its own usually means the structural sill.

Frequently asked

How much is a Tesla Model 3 rocker panel?

The plastic rocker panel cover for the 2017–2023 Model 3 is CA$139 per side at MapleV, and Tesla allows 0.18 hour to fit it. The welded rocker panel under the cover is a body-shop repair, not a part we sell, and costs many times more.

How much is a Tesla Model Y rocker panel?

The rocker panel cover for the 2020–2024 Model Y is CA$209 per side at MapleV, plus CA$269 for the carrier if its clip mounts are broken. The 2025+ Model Y Juniper cover is CA$339 per side.

Is the rocker panel the same as the side skirt?

The side skirt is the plastic rocker panel cover, the part people scrape on kerbs. The rocker panel, or sill, is the welded box section of the body under it. Our catalogue sells the cover and, for the 2020–2024 Model Y, the carrier it clips to.

Does a Tesla rocker panel cover need to be painted?

The covers we sell are black textured plastic and are fitted as they come, so there is no paint line. Tesla's procedure for the Model 3 cover is 0.18 hour and for the Model Y covers 0.12 and 0.06 hour, all parts in hand.

Can I replace a Tesla rocker cover myself?

It is a bolt-and-clip part, and Tesla's own times are under a quarter of an hour. The clips that join it to the wheel arch liners break easily, and on the 2020–2024 Model Y a torn cover often takes the carrier's clip mounts with it, so check those before ordering only the cover.
