Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cabin air filter: when to change it and what it costs in Canada

Updated · Version française

Aftermarket cabin air filter set for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla OE 1107681-00-C

Every Tesla Model 3 and Model Y has two cabin air filters, one above the other, in the heating and air-conditioning (HVAC) module. You reach them from the front passenger footwell. Tesla says to replace them every 2 years. A Model Y equipped with Tesla's HEPA system also has a filter box under the hood, behind the front trunk, with two HEPA filters and two carbon filters. Tesla says to replace those every 3 years.

Our filters are aftermarket. The cabin set has both filters and is listed under Tesla number 1107681-00-C: CA$19. For the Model Y, the HEPA set is CA$45, the carbon set CA$38, and both together CA$75.

Which cabin filters does a Model 3 or Model Y have?

Tesla's owner's manuals describe the same filters for both cars. They stop pollen, industrial fallout, road dust and other particles from coming in through the vents. There are two, an upper and a lower one, and you change both at once. Tesla's shop sells the filter on its own and says two are needed.

Model Y cars equipped with Tesla's HEPA system have a second set. The HEPA filter assembly sits under the hood, behind the front trunk, under the rear underhood apron. It holds two HEPA filters and two carbon filters. Tesla's Model Y schedule lists the cabin filters every 2 years and the HEPA and carbon filters every 3 years, if equipped. The Model 3 schedule and do-it-yourself guide list the cabin filters only.

Tesla's shop lists its cabin filter as compatible with all Model 3 and Model Y. Our cabin set is listed for all of them too, Highland and Juniper included. Our HEPA set (1658375-00-B) and carbon set (1658376-20-C) are listed for the Model Y and the Model Y Juniper. Tesla's HEPA instructions say the job is the same on cars built from about February 2025.

How often does Tesla say to change them?

Tesla's service intervals for the Model 3 and Model Y: cabin air filter every 2 years (every year in China), and on a Model Y equipped with them, HEPA and carbon filters every 3 years. Tesla adds that these assume typical driving. Driving habits, use and conditions can make a change due sooner or later.

The car keeps track. Controls > Service > Maintenance on the touchscreen shows the Maintenance Summary: when each filter was last changed and when the next change is due. If you change a filter yourself, reset that item on the screen. The car records the date and mileage, and the record stays with the car for the next owner. Tesla's service manuals also reset a cabin filter health score, and the steps depend on the car. On the 2017–2023 Model 3, the 2024+ Model 3 and the 2020–2024 Model Y running software 2024.14 or newer, a technician does it in Service Mode. On the 2025+ Model Y, the change is recorded under Service > Maintenance > Cabin Air Filter Replacement, with Record and Confirm.

How to change the cabin filters (Tesla's procedure)

Tesla publishes the steps in its owner's manuals and on its public do-it-yourself pages. Turn the climate control off. Slide the front passenger seat all the way back and take out the floor mat. With a trim tool, release the right side panel of the centre console and the passenger footwell cover (clips, or magnets on newer Model Y). Unplug the cover's two connectors, for the footwell light and the speaker. Pull on the plastic connector, never on the wires.

Next, the filter cover. On the Model 3, Tesla's instructions say it is held by a T20 screw (a T20/6 mm hybrid on some cars), tightened to 1.2 Nm on refit, or on some cars by two tabs. A Model Y built before about February 2025 has a 6 mm screw or tabs; one built after has two tabs at the bottom of the cover. On the Model 3, Tesla warns not to stretch or bend the orange high-voltage cables attached to the cover, and to stop if they are damaged.

Fold the filter tabs out and pull the upper filter out. Lift the lower one up and out. Put the new lower filter in first, then the upper one, with the arrows on both pointing to the back of the car. Fold the tabs in, refit the cover, plug the two connectors back in, and clip the footwell cover and side panel back on. Then reset the cabin air filter item in the Maintenance Summary.

Tesla's flat-rate times for a shop: 0.18 hour on the 2017–2023 Model 3 and the 2020–2024 Model Y (correction code 18100102), 0.18 hour on the 2024+ Model 3 (code 1810010032), and 0.12 hour on the 2025+ Model Y (code 1810010702). These are as published in Tesla's service manuals in October 2026.

Tesla's manuals recommend genuine Tesla parts and say damage caused by non-approved parts is not covered by its warranty. Its do-it-yourself pages add that damage caused by maintenance done by technicians Tesla has not certified is not covered either. Our guide on aftermarket parts and the Tesla warranty in Canada explains where that line falls.

How to change the Model Y HEPA and carbon filters

From Tesla's do-it-yourself page for the Model Y HEPA filters. Open the hood and lift out the rear underhood apron; it is held by clips. With a 10 mm socket, remove the bolt holding the washer fluid neck to the front trunk tub, and pull the neck out of the tank. The hose stays on, and a little fluid may spill if the tank is full. Remove the two 10 mm bolts on the HEPA assembly, tip its back edge up past the brake fluid reservoir and lift it out.

Ten T20 screws hold the cover on the assembly. Take out the old carbon filters, then pry each HEPA filter's rubber gasket free. Seat the new HEPA filters so the gasket sits all the way round; flexing the housing outward helps. Put the carbon filters in with their arrows pointing toward you. The cover screws go back to 1.6 Nm. Refit the assembly with its two bolts. Make sure the O-ring on the washer neck is fully seated, push the neck back into the tank and clip the hose into its three tabs; on cars built before about February 2025, refit the bolt or clip that holds the neck. Then clip the apron back until it clicks.

Tesla's flat-rate time is 0.24 hour on both the 2020–2024 Model Y (correction code 18105502) and the 2025+ Model Y (code 1810011502), as published in October 2026. Afterwards, Tesla's procedure records the change under Controls > Service > Maintenance > HEPA Filter Replacement, with Record and Confirm, which also resets the HEPA filter health score. On the 2020–2024 Model Y, it does this from Service Mode.
